Duplicate PAN Card

PAN Card

Each PAN issued by the Income Tax Department remains valid for a lifetime. However, there are instances where a PAN card may be lost, stolen, or damaged. In such cases, the department provides a duplicate PAN card upon request.

When applying for a duplicate PAN card, the PAN number and details remain unchanged; only a new card is issued while keeping all other information intact. The Income Tax Department has simplified the process of obtaining a duplicate PAN card. Here’s how you can apply for one.

Understanding a Duplicate PAN Card

A duplicate PAN card is a reissued document provided by the Income Tax Department when the original card is lost, misplaced, or damaged. Given that crucial documents are often at risk, the department has streamlined the process for obtaining a duplicate PAN card. Let’s explore the steps.

Situations Requiring a Duplicate PAN Card

Lost or Stolen:

Since people commonly carry their PAN cards in wallets or purses, they may lose them if the wallet is stolen. Multiple applications for duplicate PAN cards are quite common in India.

If theft occurs, an FIR must be lodged, and a copy of the report should be attached along with the application and other required documents.

Misplaced:

Many individuals inadvertently misplace their PAN cards and struggle to recall where they last kept them.

Damaged:

If the PAN card suffers any form of damage, it is necessary to request a reprint through the PAN Card issuance portal.

Steps to Apply for a Duplicate PAN Card

Applying for a duplicate PAN card is simple. You can submit your application online via the TIN-NSDL portal or offline by mailing a paper application to the NSDL PAN services unit. Opting for the online method saves both time and effort.

Follow these steps to obtain a duplicate PAN card:

  • Go to TIN-NSDL and select the application type: “Changes or corrections in existing PAN data/Reprint of PAN card (select ‘No changes in existing PAN data’).”
  • Enter the required details and submit the application form.
  • A token number will be generated and sent to your registered email. Save this token for future reference.
  • Complete the “Personal Details” section and choose how you want to submit your PAN application. The available submission methods include:
  • Physical submission: Print the acknowledgment form after payment and send it along with the necessary documents to NSDL’s PAN services unit.
  • E-KYC and e-sign (paperless submission): Requires Aadhaar details. An OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number for verification. No additional documents, photos, or signatures are required.
  • E-sign with scanned images: Requires Aadhaar verification and scanned copies of your photo, signature, and supporting documents. An OTP will be used for authentication.
  • Choose whether you need a physical PAN card or an e-PAN card. If opting for an e-PAN, provide a valid email address to receive the digitally signed document.
  • Fill in the “Contact & Other Details” and “Document Details” sections.
  • Proceed to payment, after which an acknowledgment receipt will be generated.
  • Use the 15-digit acknowledgment number to track the status of your duplicate PAN card application.
