What is Form 49A?

Form 49A is the application form used to apply for a Permanent Account Number (PAN) for Indian residents. Individuals who are residents of India and wish to obtain a PAN card must complete Form 49A, which can be downloaded online from either the NSDL e-Governance official site or the UTIITSL website.

Structure of Form 49A

Form 49A is organized into different sections to simplify the process for the applicant. At the top corners of the form, spaces are provided for the applicant to affix their photograph. The form is divided into 16 sections, each with its own sub-sections that need to be filled out.

Components of PAN Card Form 49A

Below is a detailed breakdown of all the components included in Form 49A for PAN card application.

  • Assessing officer code- In this section, the applicant needs to mention the Area code, Accounts office type, Range code, and Accounts office number. The required details can be found in the AO code section.
  • Name- Here, the applicant needs to provide their marital status, full name (first, last, and surname).
  • Abbreviation of the name- This section requires the applicant to provide an abbreviation of their name as it will appear on their PAN card.
  • Other names- In this section, applicants must mention if they have ever been known by a different name. If so, they need to provide details such as their old name’s first, last, and surname.
  • Gender- Applicants must specify their gender in this section of the form.
  • Date of birth– Individuals must mention their date of birth, while organizations must provide their incorporation/partnership/agreement or trust deed date.
  • Father’s name- This section is to mention the father's name (first, last, and surname). This is applicable only to single applicants, including married women.
  • Address-  In this part of the form, the applicant should provide their residential and business addresses. It is essential to input the correct and complete address information.
  • Address of communication- The applicant needs to choose a communication address (either residential or office address).
  • Telephone number and email ID- The applicant must provide the country code, state code, and contact number (mobile/landline), along with their email address.
  • Status of applicant- The applicant needs to specify their status (individual, HUF member, company, partnership, etc.) in this section.
  • Registration number- This section refers to the registration number for businesses like corporations, firms, LLPs, etc.
  • Aadhaar number-If the individual has an Aadhaar card, the Aadhaar number must be provided here.
  • Source of income– In this section, the applicant must mention the source of their income.
  • Representative Assessee- The name and address of the representative assessee need to be mentioned by the applicant.
  • Documents submitted- This section requires the applicant to list all the documents submitted along with the form.

How to Fill PAN 49A Form?

Here are some important guidelines to follow when filling out the PAN 49A form:

  • Language and general rules- The form must be filled out in English only. It is mandatory to use block letters, preferably with black ink. Each box should contain a single character, with a space left after each character.
  • Pictures- The form requires two recent passport-sized color photographs in the upper corners. Ensure the photographs are not stapled or clipped, as these will be used on the PAN card. The quality of the photo will affect the clarity of the photo on the PAN card.
  • Signature on the photograph- The applicant must sign or provide a left-hand thumb impression across the photograph attached to the top-left corner of the form. This signature/thumbprint must appear on both photographs, and the one on the right side should be inside the provided box.
  • Correct details- Care should be taken to fill in all details accurately. Incorrect information may lead to processing delays or even rejection of the application.
  • Overwriting- Avoid overwriting or making corrections on the form.
  • Contact information- Ensure that the address is complete with the town, city, and PIN code. Also, include the STD code for the telephone number listed.
